This matchup is a typical late-season divisional showdown we love to analyze because such contests are usually close; the Spreads are accurate, and the historical record is much more relevant.
In contrast, last week, the inter-conference matchup between the two Pennsylvania teams was seen by too many “experts” through the warped prism of the Steelers having been a loser in Philly since 1960.
Puh-lease...
Non-conference foes see each other every four years--prior to the 17 game schedule--and a lot of personnel, management, and coaching changes often occur between teams.
Any focus on the significance of non-conference history is merely proof people who don’t know their craft are compelled to demonstrate their need to display that to the world
Like most divisional games, this TNF clash gives us a lot to chew on:
Denver and L.A. boast the two best scoring defenses in the NFL
At this juncture, Justin Herbert is a better QB than Bo Nix...
But His Chargers have averaged just 18.5 PPG in the last month...
The Bolts score four more points on offense a game and have the best RZ scoring defense in the league...
The Broncs are second best at Red Zone defense...
Denver’s Bo Nix has turned the rookie corner and his Broncos have won four straight against mediocre--as the NFL allows it to be--competition..
Denver has scored 35 PPG during their last four outings...
Excepting Baltimore’s Week Nine 41-10 breaking of the Broncos, and the Electricians shorting out during last week’s 40-17 plank-walking at the hands of the Matey’s, both squads have been close in nearly every game...
We’re going with Denver because Sean Payton has been here before, with a young QB who he can mold into a top-tier force. Jim Harbaugh is still melding with his new team as evidenced by the his Chargers losing three of their last four--albeit to quality opponents.
Denver has the NFL’s second best mark at holding opposing rushers to only 3.9 YPR--L.A. is 26th--and the Wild Horse’s 5th best rush defense closes the statistical deal for us.
L.A.'s 20-21 home record at SoFi stadium doesn’t hurt either.
This will be a close game; we’ll take Denver and the points barely Over the Number.
Broncos 23
Chargers 20
