Pretty much a break-even 2025 NFL Handicapping effort by the Gairzo, but the boys at CBS, The Sporting news--and a few others were well below that minimum standard...
Enough small talk--it’s a new year; let’s get to the games...
GAME OF THE WEEK
New England Patriots @ Seattle Seahawks -3.5. 44.5 GW [O]
We haven’t budged an inch from our Super Bowl analysis found here:
Drake Maye’s Patriots aren ‘t going to sneak up on anyone this year, and according to several respected sites, New England’s draft was decidedly mediocre.
Again, we believe the chances of a Seattle blowout far outweigh the possibility of a field goal loss--the hook doesn’t impress us.
Give the Pats the points, and enjoy watching them trudge into a buzz saw in the Pacific Northwest. We’re going with the Over...
Seahawks 30
Patriots. 16
LOCK OF THE WEEK
Chicago Bears @ Carolina Panthers +3 47.5 LW [U]
I just don’t get Vegas’ thinking on this line--only a field goal? I agree, the Black Cats helped themselves with an impressive draft, and owner, David Tepper, just gave QB, Bryce Young a public vote of confidence.
I don’t think Young’s first four campaigns should’ve earned him such confidence--and watch out, Kenny Picket is backing him up.
Chicago’s Caleb Willliams is becoming elite , and HC, Ben Johnson, gives us more to like than Dave Canales in Charlotte. (The problem in Carolina is ownership.)
Week One is not our favorite time to bet against a home dog, but the Bears are going to be a serious team this year...
Give up the field goal, take Da Bears , and play the Under...
Bears. 28
Panthers 10
OVER/UNDER OF THE WEEK
Arizona Cardinals @ Los Angeles Chargers -10.5 47.5 O/U
After getting humbled during the opening two NFL games of the year, we’re sticking with our perspective on September games, and looking for low-scoring late-pre-season type games.
We love the experience, the record and habit of winning Jim Harbaugh has brought to every level of his game in every role he’s played.
We simply don’t have the confidence with the Desert Dwellers, their QB situation with Jacoby Brisset or Gardner Minshew, or new head honcho, Mike LeFleur’s ability to turn around a difficult dynamic in Arizona.
We think the Total here is 3-4 points too high...
We’ll take the Bolts to strike often at home and stifle whatever offense the Red Birds field--the Under is our most confident call of an unpredictable opening NFL weekend
Chargers 26
Cardinals. 17
UPSET SPECIAL
Cleveland Browns vs Jacksonville Jaguars -8 40.5 US [O]
The Jimmy Haslam led Cleveland Browns deserve all the mocking and disrespect they get. Since Haslam took over in, 2012, the Browns are second only to the pathetic Jets when you measure wins against losses.
Kevin Stefanski, who never had a decent quarterback in Cleveland, must be thrilled to be in Atlamta Falcon’s owner, Arthur Blank, is no Rooney or Mara, but compared to the Haslams...
We think the Spread here is inflated
The Browns defense is still legit, and they’ll be defending against Michael Penix, as Tua, yet again, is injured. I think the Brown beat their old coach and win outright, barely above the Number.
Browns 21
Falcons 20
STEELER GAME
Atlanta Falcons @ Pittsburgh Steelers -6. 41. (U)
Just as we remind ourselves to stick to our “this is. really an extension of the pre-season...” analysis, were goin to go against that self-proclaimed genius.
Our reasoning lies in familiarity between new Pittsburgh HC, Mike McCarthy and A-A-Ron Rodgers, and Rodgers' familiarity with a receiver’s room which can become top five in the league....
Meanwhile, in Peach country, Kevin Stefanski’s two playoff years in Ohio don’t match McCarthy’s record of success and consistency. His Falcon’ defense is young and unproven, the QB room is sketchy---and the Stereler are looking to dominate, and give McCarthy a solid start in Pittsburgh.
We think they will. The Under is our cautious call.
